WAYS TO DETERMINE GEAR RATIO

  1. Count the teeth on ring and pinion gears
  2. Divide the tooth count of ring gear by the tooth count of pinion gear (carry out to 2 decimal points)

Example:

41 tooth ring gear divided by a 10 tooth pinion gearsyields a 4.10:1 axle ratio

Determining the ratio from the tags

*       Normally spicer axles have a small tag attached under one of the axle cover bolts. It may have a direct reading or a tooth count. But it will have a bill of material number – usually a 6 digit number with a dash number. This can be deciphered with a Spicer’s code book.

Estimate the axle ratio from tire rotations

*       Axle ratio may be determined by counting the wheel and drive shaft rotations *       Select a level surface *       Mark the tire edge (bottom) and a spot on the drive shaft so you can see it as it rotates *       Roll the vehicle straight ahead until the tire rotates exactly one rotation (360°) *       Count drive line turns as the vehicle moves

EXAMPLE

3 ¾ revolutions indicate your ratio is probably 3.73:14 revolutions 4:10:14 ¼ revolutions 4.27:15 1/3 revolutions 5.38:1
