Cheap Jeepin'
DATE: 06/02/2008 22:39:06 / MOOD: feel like wheelin
I'm broke! I know, I'm not alone when I say this. We all have bills, rent/mortgages, and for some reason my kids want to eat regularly. How am I supposed to build a Jeep?! So far I've paid out $700 cash and assembled 1, barely running Jeep. I started with a $200 1987 YJ, 4.2, 5 speed that was supposed to be in decent shape. The frame, I discovered, is shot so I parted with $500 for another '87 that only lacks an engine. I've been able to swap 2 doors and 1 of my hard tops for a Detroit locker, a used Borla cat-back exhaust and a soft top frame. OK, I guess my project is still on the cheap end of the scale. In my defense, here in Central NY, there aren't that many sources for used off-road equip. or swap meets that I know of. I still want to add a mild lift with shocks, 31s and build some beefy bumpers. What I need are some ideas from folks with experience. Is a shackle lift a good 1st lift? I also need to find detailed plans for a winch bumper and a rear bumper with a tire carrier. I don't have a garage to work in, but summer's here. My tool box has the basics and I have an air compressor. I have friends that will lend me tools and their time on weekends. I'll thank everyone in advance for any advice or tech. help. See you out there!
