I was checking the fluids today, and noticed in the service manual that the transfer case fluid calls for Mopar transmission fluid. The fluid currently in the transfer case is definitely gear oil. Should I just drain it, or do I need to be concerned about any other problems it may have caused? The main reason for checking the fluids was because I have noticed the floor board gets extremely hot to the touch. I thought I might have an exhause leak, but that does not appear to be the case. Any ideas, or is this just normal? Thanks,Vernon |

i would drain it and put in the trans fluid like it says, it has a different viscosity than gear oil

I have never known a Jeep NOT to have HOT floorboards. I have an '89 YJ, you could fry an egg on my floor - all the time. My old boss has a '05 that he turned into a rock crawler - has the same problem. If anyone knows a way to lessen the heat.. SPEAK UP!! Your wrong fluid, cant be good, but its probably not going to help your heat issue. --------------------------------------------------------------

the transfer case takes a red tranny fluid (atf+3) .. thats an easy way to tell if its the wrong fluid.. as for floor heat, the main reason why they put carpet in jeeps is to prevent the possibility of burns from the floor.. in newer tjs, they even put a warning on the floor of the pan that warns you of the heat.. its shouldnt be getting hot enough to "fry an egg" on, but it will be hot.. if its hot enough to actually cause a burn on your skin, then its definately getting too hot.. in that case, i would change your transmission fluid and your transfer case fluid.. you can get transmission cooling systems, but with normal day to day driving, with no serious load on the transmission, it isnt a nessicary buy.. i would try fluids first, if its really getting that hot..

The floors get hot on all Jeeps because of the exaust systems under the floor and the heat from the engine running under the floor board. There is no way to stop the heating up- but I agree the floors should NOT get hot enough to "fry an egg"! A body lift helps dramatically as it allows more space and airflow- but alot of people do NOT like the higher center of gravity- so they avoid them- it's your Jeep and your choice. I have a BL and do not have the hot floor issues- I also Line-X'd my inner body tub and added a quality carpet set and jute backing- so with all that I enjoy a comfortable cab in the summer. Your trans fluid is NOT going to change your heat issue- but WILL save you from having to replace bearings that are not getting the proper lubrication due tot he wrong viscosity oil in it! Get the proper fluid in it ASAP and save it! Good luck.
