so... a few weeks ago i smashed the rear axle of my jeep against a concrete culvert. was stuck in a ditch attempting to back out counldn't climb the side of the ditch because it was too slick so it slid into the culvert. now it makes and exremely terrible noise/shake makes me think the rear ends about to fall out of it. when i go into reverse and when i accelerate hard is when this usually ahppens. and occasionally when i corner in either direction. i want to say it is having to do with the axle trying to "wrap" but i've examined it as best i can and cannot determine where the noise and shake is coming from. i know something is damaged just not what exactly it is... but it still performs fine. tires are not wearing unevenly..
also i want to buy a winch. prefer to buy a new one.. found one on quadratecs web site for $549. is this a good winch or should i go a little heavier and more expensive? i've never gotten the jeep stuck but i want to lift it and i know when i lift it and put bigger tires with the stock engine transmission im going get it bogged sooner or later.. so im doing bumpers/winch first then lift it. hopefully when i lift it that noise/shake from my rear axle disappears too.. but i don't know.

this only happens when you are in reverse? Never when going forward?

no, it does happen when going forward too. only in first gear during first movement. never between gears or anything..

well lets try the jeep thing hardcore this time. |

well, start with the easy stuff to see and check out your u joint on your rear driveshaft.. make sure you didnt break a cap or loose bearings.. theres a possibility it could have broke when you were stuck.. next, i would check if you bent your drive shaft.. take a look, and see if you think it looks a little off.. and, if all those seem fine, i would open up the rear differential, and make sure that your ring and pinion and spider gears are fine, and while your in there take a peak at the bearings and make sure those are fine.. if all seems kosher, next step would be transmission..
keep me posted on how it goes..
