The wife and I are thinking about getting a 2007 Commander most likely in the next 2-3 weeks. I'm just looking for anyones opinion on them. Likes, dislikes, cool stuff, crappy stuf, whatever you can offer.

I see there only 1 registered user on the space with a Commander, but there has to be others on here that have one... maybe.. anyone... hellooooo.

Thanks

Sean

my buddy brought his out on some fire roads with us the other weekend. for being super low, heavy as hell and no low range it did better than i thought it would. all in all not a bad vehichle but if moderate wheeling is in the future i'd choose something else. also on the inside no one over 5'5" will be confortable in any of the rear seat. and with the rear seat up the trunk isn't big enough to fit a case of beer. i'd take a grand over a commander personally

Having now owned the Commander for over 3 months I can make some serious recommendations. Here in CO it performs very well, with one exception - The tires. I got mine with the optional rims and performance tires. On the regular road they are fantastic. On the ice and hardpacked snow - NIGHTMARE as expected.

I have owned several Cherokees, a Commanche, and a Grand Waggy, and for outright performance, this Commander really ups the ante.

Unless you have/had a vehicle with Tractions Control, Stability Control, and AWD, then first chance you get when it snows/ice storms, go to a safe location and hammer away with it because you will discover that you will need to change your style of driving.

The system is reactionary. Instead of having all that traction in the first place, what I refer to as "positive engagement" of the system, this lacks.. When you lock a Cherokee or Waggy you KNOW you are in 4 wheel drive. This system does not have that feedback, which at first is very disconcerting.

I had my doubts about how well the system would work, especially with the performance tires, and I always planned on upgrading the tires anyways, but WOW, the system works. I had the unfortunate occasion to find out just how well it worked when an idiot flying down the road in the oncoming lane in his Subaru slid into my lane (and was not going to be clear of it before I got there) gave me the chance to see what all those electronics could do. It was simply amazing the way the vehicle practically steered itself. I had known from playing with it sort of what to expect but at over 40 mph it really honestly kept control of the vehicle and allowed me to steer out of the accident. I was extremely impressed.

Now that I have "learned" how to drive it, it is great fun!!! I can throw it around and hang the rear end out knowing just how she'll get corrected, which makes for great power sliding fun on open roads. You can really run this Jeep to it's limits and still feel confident in what it is going to do.

You learn to work with the Commander... I did get the chance to put it into the mud pretty deep and it "felt" it's way out, you can feel it switching power and it just sort of hops and tugs and keeps on going...

If you plan on aftermarket mods, be wary of one thing - the Traction Control and Stability control are geared off the known tire size so if you choose to go with something larger, you will need to have the system re calibrated. At this time the dealership that I go to said "NUH UH" to doing it although AEV (American Expedition Vehicles) is coming out with a mod to do just that.

Also do not expect the V8 Mileage to be as-advertised if you live or work in CO. I get 13.5 not 16.

The corn juice does work with no perceivable loss of power but a large hit on fuel economy. A 50/50 tank works best - good power, decent mileage.

Any questions just ask!

Zack
