I just hit cover shot #7 for me or my Jeep. Yea, it's 11 years old, but being in the right spot at the right time is key to getting on a cover. Ok, it doesn't hurt that I'm also a photograher. But let me give ya a couple tips for YOU to get on a cover some day.
1. Watch for folks with cameras that look like they know what they're doing, or have real cameras on organized runs.
2. Do organized runs with clubs and associations whenever you can -- photographers hang out there also. Magazine love to help us advertise our organized events by giving us some coverage (photos).
3. Keep your rig photo-ready -- not necessarily street pretty; but not a mess either. Also, what you wear is important. Avoid vulgar stuff and keep your stickers kid-rated.
4. Lastly when you see a real photographer, ASK if you can provide a shot/set up with your rig. You just never know. BE wiling to take the time for a good shot. It just might happen.

Sounds like an awful lotta work just to get your picture on the front of a rag for a month...
